The Five SCARIEST Things About Running a Half or Full Marathon

Happy Halloween, Everybody!!

For today’s special Halloween Edition of The Friday Five Link Up, I thought I’d discuss the five SCARIEST things that can happen during a half or full marathon. Are you ready?? You may want to play Thriller or Monster Mash in the background to get you in the mood.

My family always lets me clean out the pumpkins. #blessed (that was sarcasm)
  1. Getting stuck in traffic and being late to the start. This happens, Friends. To the best of runners. Get their early and avoid this frightening reality!!
  2. Hurting yourself/getting sick during your taper. This is huge. This causes runners to avoid roller skating, gardening, and cobble stone for weeks before an event. Also, we avoid people who sneeze or cough as well as anyone that looks like they might sneeze or cough. We didn’t train for 8 months to let your cold take us out. Terrifying.
  3. And speaking of travel horror (and I’m almost afraid to type this one) Weather Related Travel Delays. These can be in the form of ice/snow/tornados or hurricanes. Even the threat of such a travel delaying (or canceling) event can strike terror into the heart of the tapering marathoner for days. Dang you Accuweather. Dang. you.
  4. Finishing last. This is the irrational fear of every half and full marathoner, at least the first few times you race. It will give you nightmares and you will worry about it anytime there’s a break in the crowd and you can’t sense anyone behind you. As opposed to in an actual horror movie where having someone following you is BAD, in this running terror having  NO ONE BEHIND YOU is the most frightening thing of all.
  5. (and last but certainly not least as it is the SCARIEST of half and full marathon terrors) POOPING YOUR PANTS. I’ll not say anything else about this. It’s too terrifying to mention.
May NONE of these terrifying things become reality for you. May they all stay in our imaginations like ghosts and goblins and things that go bump in the night. I’ll be here tonight, handing out candy and maintaining my reputation as that crazy Disney lady who dresses up every year (pic below was last year). This year, I’m going as Disney’s newest (non Frozen) princess. Any guesses??
Halloween last year. Yes, I’m really into it. Stay safe and have fun, Everyone!
Happy Running.
Jen
