Disney World Marathon Training Week 10! Weekly Update

So here we are, at the end of another week of training for the Walt Disney World Marathon. I can’t believe we’re over half way through and actually, considering the Hal Higdon Training Plan calls for a 3 week taper, we only have 6 weeks left of hard training! But the longest of the long runs are yet to come so we’re not nearly finished yet!

Here’s how the week went.

Sunday – schedule called for Cross Training. Since I was traveling home that day from the Wine and Dine Half Marathon in Orlando, I think we shall call schlepping through the airport cross training. I know it wears me out!

Monday – Rest Day. Nailed it.

Tuesday – 4 miles easy. I only did 2. My legs were still tired and so was my body! Looking at this week, this workout seemed the easiest to skimp on.

Wednesday – 8 miles, race pace. It was SO COLD and I almost didn’t complete the mileage, but decided, ya know what? I can do this! So, even though I couldn’t feel my legs by the end, I did, indeed, complete all 8 miles at just below race pace. Win!

Thursday – 4 miles VERY easy. I did this run on the treadmill while watching Gilmore Girls and I think we need to invent a Gilmore Girls Treadmill Game. Similar to a drinking game but we will have a card that lists what you do when different things happen. For example:

Lane and her mom discuss boys – run .5 miles per hour faster for 1 minute

Lauraleigh and Rorie eat pancakes at Lukes – 30 second walk break

ANY scene with Suki and Jackson in it – increase incline to 3%

What do we think? I’m kind of serious. If you’re a Gilmore Girls fan post your ideas in the comments and I’ll try to whip something up that we can all print out and post by our treadmills. And yes, while I’m job hunting I do have too much time on my hands, thanks for asking.

Saturday – 17 miles. OK, this is the first time I’ve done this, but I’m not doing today. I have a bad cold and when I felt it coming on yesterday I thought I could still run, but it’s not just in my head, I have a cough and feel very run down. SO, because I am not an idiot, I am not going to do my long run today. I was up multiple times last night debating about this decision and the rule follower in me is saying suck it up and go anyway, but the common sense in me knows that when there’s respiratory stuff involved, you DON’T run (see this oldie but goodie from Runner’s World for more on that). Hard but right decision. Moving on.

Oh, and in case you missed it, there are only 3 days left in the giveaway to win a Tough Girls Tutu! Here’s the link with my review and how to enter.

I hope that all of you racing the Avenger’s Half this weekend have the time of your life! I can’t wait to hear (and read) all about it! And especially those of you who did Wine and Dine last weekend as the back to back Disney weekends will be me in January (WDW Full and then Star Wars, Baby!).

Happy running!!

Jen

  1. While I can’t help you with your Gilmore Girls game (I’ve never watched it, forgive me!) I do think it sounds like a terrific idea. Really, it wouldn’t be too hard to broaden the game to include any kind of TV or movie watching while on the ‘mill. Right now I’m FINALLY watching the Twilight series! (IKR? Read the books but never got a chance to see the movies. There’s been a small void in my life that is now being filled.) Anyway, I can see widening the game to be something like “kissing scene, increase .5mph for 1 minute” or “Argument/fight, walk for 30 seconds” etc… Anything to make a treadmill run more exciting, right? Oh and can I just say how jealous I am of your back to back runDisney weekends? How much fun will that be! And not only will you get a medal for an inaugural race but also the coveted Coast to Coast medal! Wow, so awesome!!

    1. thanks, Shannon! It’s a huge blessing and I am really excited about it. Not sure how I’ll feel the week of, though – marathon and then a half marathon a week later might be tough! But I’m really going to take it slow for the Star Wars half and just have fun! Thanks for reading!
