I can hardly believe it, but RnR Savannah half marathon is 3 weeks away! I am excited and nervous (mostly excited) and I wanted to give a quick training update.
This last week I didn’t get in all the mileage I wanted but it was for a great reason. I had the opportunity to grab the twins and head to my mom’s for a few days. It’s been 3 years since I’d been “home” (which is what I consider her house even though I’ve never actually lived there!) and it was wonderful to spend that time with her and with my brother and sister and their families.
But her home is in the mountains and the closest “flattish” running trail is a little bit of a drive so I only did it once, but it was SPECTACULAR. If you are ever in the Prescott area, I highly recommend running the Peavine Trail. Just gorgeous. There’s a $3 parking fee so be aware of that, but very much worth it!
I was able to get in 4 miles on Thursday morning but honestly, that 3 hour time difference mattered more than I’d like to admit. I was pretty wiped out and had a very low key week once we got back.
But then came Saturday! My 12 miler, honestly, went far better than I had anticipated and really boosted my confidence for race day!
I don’t have my training schedule yet from my coach but I’m assuming this will be my last week of high mileage and then we will taper for the next two. I feel VERY ready for this race and can’t wait to visit Savannah for the first time! I went all out and did the VIP tent for race day so hopefully that was money well spent. But regardless, “racecations” are always fun and exciting!
One last note – even though I’ve been through this process many, many times I am always amazed at how my body can rise to the challenge! If you’ll remember back many week’s ago, I was having trouble just completing a 5 miler and yesterday’s 12, although certainly not easy, was not the challenge I expected.
Steady, slow, consistent increases in mileage make the training fun, keep me injury free and allow me to enjoy the process! Are you training for something big or are you dreaming of someday doing a half or full marathon? What’s holding you back? Would love to hear about it in the comments below.
I am training to train right now. Summer running was virtually nonexistent. I’m trying something new and will be racing 5Ks for my best time in a 5-race series beginning Jan. 1. I can pull off 3.1 miles now but am looking forward to the different challenge of speed. Plus, the training is not as rough on my body. I am interested to see if I get the same feeling of accomplishment with these as I have with 13.1.
I definitely think you can! Speed work is a completely different animal and I’ve thought of training for a fast 5K myself. Please keep me posted on how it goes!
