Losing 80 Pounds in 80 Days – My Husband is FINALLY Sharing his Story

I’ve been after Scott to write this post for over a year. It’s a miraculous, amazing, joyful story that definitely ends with a happily ever after because I have a healthier and happier husband. He’s been my best friend since I was 18 years old, and I cannot express my pride and admiration for his journey.  He’s kept the weight off and his medical issues have stayed a distant memory!!

It’s not how you fall down, it’s how you get up.  I was a 40 something year old guy, in a job that generates inconsistent yet brief bouts of significant stress, and in a health condition that I just wasn’t willing to put up with any more.  So I lost a bunch of weight.
And that changed everything.

Most of Jena’s runner-girl cult saw and/or knew me when I was big Scott.  I had done a couple of half marathons during my BS (big Scott) years and there are plenty of Facebook and Disney photo-pass pic’s of me to document my BS look.

Before

After – 100 pounds lighter and oh so much healthier and happier!
A change had to happen.  There were only two options before me.  Either I muddle on, over-weight, quietly and slowly losing dexterity, mobility, motivation, and the natural desire to fight and survive.  Or I fixed what I could now.

In my simple view of the world, my weight was the quickest and simplest health issue to deal with.  So that’s what I hit first.  ‘Weight Loss’ is an oxymoron in that it’s an equally easy and hard thing to do.  It’s easy because the math is very simple; way less calories in and way more calories out, and knock off the fatty substances for a season.  Mechanically, for me, it really was that simple.  The hard part is the phycology and genetics that are ultimately behind significantly over-weight human beings.  I was also the guy that used food for way more than just energy and sustenance and that all needed to change as well. The work was not easy but it was vital and worth it.

The only number I am going to share in this communication piece is 80.   I lost that much body weight in pounds in as many days.  It was tough.  Not only on me but on Jena and the boys.  Remember that the mechanics are easy, but the mental work and genetic part can be tough.

So to help off-set the tough part, I committed to a full-marathon.  Motivation, I discovered, is critical.  BS can knock out a half…but a full is a whole ‘nother animal.  BS had to lose the LB’s.

I also got more and more interested in different types of, and approaches too, personal sport and exercise.  For me, running made the most sense.  It’s cheap.  And that’s good because I’m cheap.  Something I can do nearly any day of the year.  Cut out the inclement weather and when it’s just too damn hot, where I live you have a good 275 days a year to run.  Lots, and I mean lots, of people are running.  There are all kinds of running clubs, running events, training teams, smart phone running apps, running plans, etc.  And they are built for people of all ages, conditions, and interests.  Seriously though, there is such a plethora of running options that any one at any level can find someone to workout with or a plan/scenario that works for them.

For me, it worked.  I dropped lots of weight and haven’t regained it.  And I’m immensely enjoying the life of a healthy, confident middle aged dude, prepping for the Disney Goofy race in January.  And I occasionally get that satisfaction of being the last guy standing at the end of an active day with my three teenage boys.

Of all the changes I made in my life (the running, my half-assed vegetarianism, rapid weight loss, etc.), the running is the catalyst for me.  Just like a hand in a glove.

Scott and Jeff Galloway right after he told him his story. Scott’s been a Galloway runner since the beginning. Thank you, Jeff, for your amazing program!
