Wow, this was a good training week! I did a lot on the treadmill because of the heat but did my long run today outside. So here’s how the week played out:
Monday – 4+ – A 4 mile steady run followed by 4 quick 2 minute intervals with 20 seconds of recovery in between. Ended up being about 4.5 miles and I enjoyed it! Movie watched? Summer Magic. That Haley Mills gets me every time . . .
Wed – 3X1 – this was new for me but basically we were to do a one mile slow run then 3 fast miles with a 2 minute walk break in between each one. Followed by one slow mile. I cheated slightly due to time and only did a half mile to start and end. Ended up being 4.7 miles total. Sue me. Movie watched? Mary Poppins. Yes, I’m on a Disney roll this week. But we leave for our summer Disney trip in 2 weeks so give me a break;).
Friday – 4 miles slow and steady. Movie watched? Anne of Avonlea! Ya know that part where Gilbert looks at her and pleads, “please say yes”? Yeah, turns out that makes me weak in the knees even when I’m on my treadmill.
Saturday – 10 mile long run. Outside. Started at 6am sharp. No movie – but I did listen to my playlist from my winter training so there was lots of fun Christmas music. I’m convinced it helped me stay cool;). I took a frozen water bottle and had another one waiting for me in the car when I was done and ate one package of the sports gummies. (the ones without caffeine – used the ones WITH once and it was not a good thing for my tummy AT ALL). Although it was very humid I felt strong and kept my pace steady so I feel good about it. Oh, and I took a piece of advice from my friend, Laura, and took a wash cloth to wipe off my face. Great idea! And I didn’t have tons of dried salt on my face when I was done. Must hydrate lots today, though – weighed myself before and after and I lost a little over 2 pounds of water. Yikes!
I leave tomorrow for San Diego for a few days and cannot tell you how I excited I am to be able to run in cooler temps!! And yes, I realize it’s odd that the thing I’m most looking forward to on vacation is my running. I don’t know what I’m turning into it!!
Book review coming soon – I’m about half way through Scott Jurek’s Eat & Run http://scottjurek.com/eatandrun/. OMG, I am LOVING it!! He’s a great writer and bonus! Recipes for yummy vegan food for distance runners. What is not to love about this book? I’m at the part where he’s just finished his first 100 mile race on a completely plant based diet and won! Well, don’t see that happening for me but I can say without hesitation that since I’ve been eating vegan I feel better and have more energy than I’ve had in years! There’s definitely something to this.
I’ll try to take some pictures of where I run in San Diego and next week do a piece about running on vacation. It’s definitely become one of my favorite ways to explore!!
And a final shout out to my good friends Alan and Selma who ran 21 miles this morning and, to avoid the heat, starting at 3:30 am! Crazy! But in the best possible way as they avoided the sun and made great time. You two are amazing!
Have a fantastic Fourth of July everyone! It’s a great time to remember that our freedom is never “free” and that we truly are blessed to live in this country. Hope you are surrounded by friends, family, good food and that you appreciate every minute!!
