My Running Year in Review and A Book Review and Give Away!

I have now been consistently running and training for races for four years. Which blows my mind both because it seems like I just started and, simultaneously, I can’t imagine a time in my life when I wasn’t heading out 3 – 4 times every week to pound the pavement and work out my “issues” through sweat and hard work.

And in running, just like in any hobby or sport, it’s a good idea to take stock every once in awhile and see where you are. How have you improved, where do you need to step it up, and where can you just pause and pat yourself on the back for all the hard work.

This year has been a busy one for me and I ran far more races than I originally intended.

We started in January with the WDW Marathon which was a GREAT (if rather warm) way to start the new year! February brought the Princess again (which is the race that every year I say I’m not doing and then end up getting roped into it by my crazy running friends), April brought the Irving Half Marathon, May brought my personal challenge of a 5K a day for 30 days (which I LOVED and I think will do again this May), August was the Disneyland Dumbo Double Dare and September was the Tour Des Fleurs (almost) 10K at the Dallas Arboretum. Finally,  November was (quite unexpectedly!) the Wine and Dine.

I loved each and every race for different reasons but what I think is more interesting is when I look at my Run Keeper app and evaluate the data for the past year.

I ran 655 miles and it took me 121 hours to do it. 121 hours of running. And I’m a pretty low mileage runner compared to some. But here’s my favorite number. In 2013 I burned (wait for it) 72,261 calories running. Seriously? That’s some serious calorie burning.

As I look to 2014 I’m not interested in running more races but I am interested in upping my consistency a tad. Although with my life I’m not sure how realistic that is so we’ll just have to see. I run for sanity first and foremost and as long as God blesses me with a body that works, I’ll keep plugging away. Also interesting? With minor variations, my pace has stayed crazy consistent from 2010 until now. I guess the good news is, I’m not slowing down at all with age but I’m also not speeding up much and I think that’s OK. I am a middle of the pack “just OK” runner who works hard, stays off anti-depressants and fits in her jeans.:)

Now onto the book review!!

Megan Biller and Krista Albrecht recently sent me the newest edition of The Runner’s Guide to Walt Disney World (actually, I begged them to send me one and they did;). Now that the holiday crazies are settling down I’ve had a chance to read it . And wow, all I can say is that if you’re even considering a Run Disney race, especially if you’re combining it with a Disney World or Disneyland vacation, you must get this book.

I loved all the detailed information about all the races on both coasts and these girls seriously did their homework. You’ll find details about every race retreat, every pre-race event, every expo and every race day. You’ll also get packing lists, restaurant info, and (my favorite part) a detailed map of every race route.

Although yes, most of this info can be found online from various sources, it would take you HOURS to find all the info that they’ve put into this one book. I loved “Krista and Megan’s Tips” in each section where they shared insights and tips from their extensive Run Disney personal experiences.

I also love that Megan and Krista are completely independent in their thoughts and have never received any compensation from Disney and have said no when Disney has offered to pay their way. This allows them to say what they feel and I like that level of integrity.

So yes, you should own this book!! Click here Runner’s Guide to WDW Buy The Book!

And, again because I begged, Megan and Krista would like to give one lucky reader a free copy!! I’m trying to get more of you to comment on the actual blog, so I think that’s how we’ll do it this time. Just comment below and you’ll be entered to win. WE WILL DO THE DRAWING ON NEW YEAR’S EVE!

Later this week I’m hoping to put together some info for those of you who are thinking that 2014 is the year you start getting serious about your running! I know you’re out there and can’t wait to meet you and hear about your journey!

May God bless you and yours as we start another year together.

Happy Running!

Jen

    1. Well, since we’re sending our first born off to college, it has to be less than last year!!;) Although marathon weekend and princess are already “for sure” so we’re off to a good start:)!

    1. You are entered!! Woohoo! Good luck! We will do the drawing on New Year’s Eve. Should have said that in the blog. Off to edit. Someday I will post a blog without a typo, I just know it;).

  1. Congratulations on a great year – running and personally! Loved reading all your 2013 adventures and looking forward to those in 2014.
I’m out for runDisney races this coming year but planning on training and signing up for Coast to Coast 2015. My stats for my first full year of running: 465miles, 95 hrs, 48K cal. Who knew that could be accomplished – if I can do it so can everyone else!

  2. Please tell me your running plans still include Niagara Falls in June!!! Now I am off to read the FP+ article since I will be at WDW the week before the Princess (but not running it so I can go to my sister’s wedding. A huge sacrifice I know!).

  3. Yes, Yes, Yes!! As a new runner who has not yet had a chance to even register for a run disney race I would love this book! I check the RunDisney site weekly for when the next registration opens (I know, I need a life). As always love the blog and especially love that calorie count..another round of Christmas cookies!! 🙂
