Have you Been to The Doctor Recently? Why you SHOULD go!

Thank you, Wikipedia, for this great article all about literal frogs in boiling water

Today was a really, really great day. The kind of day I haven’t had in awhile, in fact.

The reasons for that vary, and a lot of it has to do with some areas where God is really working on me in regards to stress and perspective, but another BIG reason is (wait for it) I FINALLY FEEL GOOD. And if I’m going to be honest, I haven’t felt well in months.

I’ve always been good about getting my physicals and mammograms (my friend, Joy’s, breast cancer battle cured me of putting those off FOREVER). But you know what I’m not good at? Going to the doctor when I don’t feel well. I don’t mean like strep or the flu – but just that low lying fatigue where you find yourself saying “I’m so tired” a million times a day, even though you’re getting enough sleep.

The truth is, most of us, as spouses, parents, employees, etc., are so busy that we really don’t even notice when we feel terrible. Let me say that again:

We don’t even notice when we feel terrible.

It’s kind of like that metaphor about frogs in boiling water – you know, the water temp goes up slowly so they don’t really notice and they don’t jump out? They just stay in that boiling water and die. Dramatic, yes, but sadly accurate.

So I shouldn’t have really been surprised when my doctor informed me that I was “severely” anemic, that I was “dangerously” low on vitamin D and B12, and that my thyroid wasn’t functioning properly. And ironically, I wasn’t upset. Quite the contrary. I thought this:

THANK GOD THERE’S SOMETHING WRONG WITH ME THAT CAN BE FIXED!

And now, almost 10 days into treatment, I am feeling AMAZING. My energy is back, my thoughts are clear again, and I don’t feel like I’m walking around on the verge of sleep every minute of the day.

So what’s my point? Well, if you’re feeling rundown, exhausted, worn out, and irritated you may want to consider, just for a moment, that there’s something physically wrong with you and make an appointment with your favorite healthcare professional. Not tomorrow. Not next week. Not when you get time. Because you won’t get time, and you’re very important to lots of people, and they need you to be well. So go do it TODAY.

That is all. Carry on. I gotta go for a run.

Jen

  1. So glad that you are feeling better. I’m great about mammograms, girlie check ups and the dentist. But terrible about physicals and eye exams. I do have a physical scheduled for next month, so maybe I can start a new routine.
