This may not be my most eloquent post. Truthfully, I am still waiting for that post to actually happen.
But once you see something, you can’t unsee it. Well, you actually can but it takes a lot of work.
I’m not going to go into a lot of detail because my mom reads the blog and she doesn’t know yet, but I’ve had a bit of an awakening in regards to white privilege and how people respond to a suburban kid getting thrown in jail without cause as opposed to how they respond (or more importantly DON’T respond) to the millions of times it happens to black young men every day.
We have become accustomed to so much. And yes, I’m looking in the mirror right now and saying these words so I’m not judging you, suburban mom who lives in bliss. I was you. In many ways, I am you.
But you can live your happy peaceful life, I’m not suggesting anyone take that away. But you can’t live it and live in denial and still be a good citizen of this country. Or a good human.
We have to human better. We have to live better. We have to open our eyes and stop hiding. Because even though many of us are woefully, shockingly and horrifically inexcusably late to this party, we can still get in on the action. We must start being the agents of change.
Black lives matter.

And if you are looking for a place to start, I suggest the documentary I Am Not Your Negro. My son recommended I watch it. You should, too. It’s free on Amazon Prime and if you watch and listen to understand . . you will.
