Isn’t all This Run Disney Princess Stuff Kind of Silly?

By any accounts, I have what one might call a “serious” profession. I have many friends who are in my same line of work who have “serious” blogs. I could name drop but I won’t;). I respect them, I love their work, and I read their blogs because they challenge me and help me as a pastor and in my personal spiritual life.

But this, as you may have realized by now, is NOT a serious blog. It is fun, it is nutty, it is vulnerable, but it’s not profound or earth shattering. And I really like that about it (if I do say so myself;).

But sometimes even I think, gosh, isn’t all this princessy Disney running stuff kind of silly? Maybe I should spend my free time on more serious pursuits, writing about more serious things and making my mark in the world with a different, perhaps more respected voice . . .

is this AWESOME or what?

But I don’t think that for long. And here’s why – my daily life? The pastoring, parenting, heartbreaking, laborious stressful stuff? I could write about that. Goodness knows there’s enough material. And the thing is, I LOVE it all, honestly, because what I do is important and I wouldn’t change it for anything! It’s what I’m called to and suits how God made me.

But sometimes it’s a bit much. And this is my outlet. This is my play. Running and racing and dressing up. Play is important and I not only think it’s OK, I think it’s biblical.

“So I recommend having fun, because there is nothing better for people to do in this world than to eat, drink, and enjoy life. That way they will experience some happiness along with all the hard work God gives them.” Ecclesiastes 8:15, NLT

And if Solomon isn’t your game (although it’s called the wisdom of Solomon for a reason), one of my other faves, Brene Brown, says it this way:

“The opposite of play is not work. The opposite of play is depression.”

So a few times a year I will gather with my fun loving friends – who, in their real lives, are physicians and therapists and accountants and moms and hospital administrators and business owners – and we will play. We will dress up, we will wear tiaras, we will laugh and ride roller coasters and watch parades and eat ice cream and sing out loud. And I happen to think there’s a lot of wisdom in that. Oh, and we’ll run 19.3 miles in two days, too. I keep forgetting about that part.

So on that note, here’s my big reveal of my outfits for the 2014 Run Disney Glass Slipper Challenge.

For the 10K I’m going with just classic pink. It’s a bit Auroraish but not all the way as to be obnoxious;). Because yeah, all this pink is quite subtle.

For the half, I’m going as Snow White. The back of this shirt is quite adorable as well – you can see it on the Raw Threads website as I neglected to take a pic.

I quite simply CANNOT WAIT!! Only a little over a week to go. I’ll be sure to take lots of pictures and tell you all about it when I get back (as per tradition;).

And if you haven’t figured out a way to play in your life? Do yourself a favor and give it some thought. Because when we play well, I believe, everything else in our life is richer and better for it.

Happy Running and Playing!

Jen
